When you think of Flushing food, you usually think of hole in the wall Chinese, Taiwanese, and Korean cuisines. Okay, you probably think of horrible parking, loud and unruly pedestrians, and fish juice stained sidewalks too but seriously, most of us go to Flushing for it's unique good eats. Last week, my wife and I were looking for a new low key place to hit up. While visiting our new shabu shabu hot pot spot, FuKuoKa Shabu on Kissena Bld across the street from the chinese supermarket, we passed by a new noodle place called 'Mr. Noodle'. The menu used to be on a big board on the wall (since removed) but we always said we'd come back to check it out. Last week we walked in to take a look at the menu. So many authentic dishes and tons of home made hand pulled noodle dishes to choose from - so far so good. They have tons of appetizers and little dishes both cold and hot to choose from like traditional sesame salted roasted peanuts (free standard) and pickled radish (kind of looked like baby carrots but it was delish (also free standard). They had everything from home made cold sliced beef and tendons to things that might take a little more bravery like tongue, frogs legs, gizzards of all sorts, chicken head delicacies etc. Just getting over a cold, I decided to stick to dishes we knew since it was our first time. We ordered the cold sliced beef w/ tendon ($4.95 for a small plate - not bad but should be more room temperatured instead of cold), 'French Style Squid' - which turned out to be a really well made dish of Fried Squid 'Chee Um Yao Yee' for $5.95 which is a steal considering the quantity and quality of the dish. As main courses, we had to try the home made hand pulled noodles. My wife got a huge bowl of noodle (haw fun) soup w/ clams which came with a little vegetables (chinese and lettuce) for $6, and I got a bowl of noodles w/ meat sauce. The description sounds kind of unappealing or somewhat italian sounding but we knew it was Jia Jia Mien. There wasn't that many beans but it was full of onions, a sauteed meat sauce that covered the home made hand pulled flour noodles for $3. Wow, this was something pretty special. I didn't care for the bed of lettuce they put it on top of since I don't fancy cooked lettuce, but the noodles and sauce they served up was pretty amazing and for only $3. We also ordered some boba and smoothies which were pretty good (machine made) at $3.50 a piece and they actually gave sliced oranges as a dessert, something you don't get to see that often unless you're at a banquet restaurant. The service was really good although their English isn't so great but the workers there were attentive, very friendly, and cleaned up the tables as soon as patrons left. The decor is pretty nice considering it's a Flushing joint serving good authentic dive food but they have 4 or 5 large banquet tables for large parties. Parking can be a bit tough as expected but we just parked across the street at the Chinese supermarket plaza. I would definitely go again and would go a little earlier than 9PM since many of their dishes were already sold out including one or two of their home made noodles. Overall a pretty good find! The best part is considering it's a Flushing resty - they even use technology like QR codes to help advertise themselves.
